Engineer Seyi Makinde, the
candidate of the People’s Democratic Party for governorship election in Oyo
state, knew that using LinkedIn, a professional networking platform, will
afford him the opportunity to interact with professionals more than
appropriating Facebook for the same purpose.
As the party flag bearer,
Engineer Makinde has posted series of information, pledging inclusive government, judicious use of existing resources, improved living
conditions, adequate funding for education sector and enabling environment for
employment creation. With a professional networking platform like LinkedIn, the
expectation is that professionals would ask the right questions whenever
candidates post issues of national importance considering their understanding
of and access to facts on the issues.
Surprisingly, Infoprations’ analysis shows that there
is a disconnection in their understanding of the public space and the public sphere.
Rather than engaging the candidate in discussion that could further development
interests, professionals who reacted to the candidate’s posts engaged in
eulogising or praise singing. “Ride on, road is getting clearer
hastag#seyimakinde2019. More of it…,” one of the professionals said.
