Various statistics have revealed
the deplorable state of education in Nigeria. Such data have established that
Nigeria needs to be committed to qualitative education delivery at primary,
secondary and tertiary levels across the country.
The striking data
being churned out by local, international organisations and public analysts
have been one of the reasons people and businesses with strong financial
capability are supporting causes that have direct and indirect connections with
educational advancement in the country.
Alhaji Aliko
Dangote is one of the Nigerian philanthropists and industrialists who believe
that education development and growth should not be the duty of the governments
alone. Through his foundation, Dangote Foundation, Nigeria and Africa’s richest
man has enlivened life and communities since 1993. In 2018, Dangote Foundation donated a well-equipped
secondary school in Lagos valued at N120 million as part of its
interventionist’s programme to boost education.
Parents and pupils
in Lekki Local Council Development Area equally benefited from foundation’s
gesture to education. On March 14th, 2019,
a total of fifty-one students from secondary
schools in Lekki LCDA were awardees of Dangote scholarship.
“Today
will be recorded in the annals of our relationship with Alhaji Aliko Dangote. He
is partnering with communities to ensure our children take charge of
development in the community,” Barrister Mukandasi Olaitan Ogidan, the Council
Chairman said.
It is not a
surprise that Alhaji Aliko Dangote does not relent in his support to education
in Nigeria. As of March 2019, report indicates that his net worth has
increased to $10.6 billion. He owns nearly 85% of publicly-traded Dangote
Cement through a holding company. According to Forbes, Dangote Cement produces
45.6 million metric tons annually and has operations in 10 countries across
Africa.
