Voices on Joshua Dariye’s 14 years Jail Term

It is not a news again that another former Governor and serving Senator has been jailed for 14 years for corrupt practices perpetrated while in office as Governor of Plateau State.  The voices from the stakeholders in the Nigeria democratic project on the prosecution in the last few days have been generating new issues.
In the ruling party camp, All Progressive Congress, the country is making headway in her quest of getting rid of corruption. To some members of the opposition party, People’s Democratic Party, President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government should not be praised for the prosecution.
After the judgment, Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, tweeted that President Muhammadu Buhari’s government didn’t charge and prosecute former Governor of Plateau State, Joshua Dariye to court. According to him, former President Goodluck Jonathan should be praised instead of President Muhammadu Buhari because former President initiated the trial of Senator Dariye before he decamped to the ruling party when the prosecution had called all its vital witnesses and conviction appeared imminent.
The position of the People’s Democratic Party in Senator Dariye’s State aligns with Omokri’s view. The spokesperson of the party said it was the decision of the PDP not to drag the former governor to court when he defected to the All Progressive Congress (APC) with the mandate of PDP because it was established that he will not escape jail.
The party said: “This is the hour we in the PDP have all been waiting for, the law has taken it course, it was a landmark judgment that has created an avenue for PDP to reclaim its stolen mandate.
However, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has said that jailing of Senator Joshua Dariye and Jolly Nyame proves that the commission is not selective in its efforts of prosecuting corrupt politicians in the country.
