Less than two months to
the September 22 governorship election in Osun State, information has it that
the state government under the leadership of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has paid
July 2018 salary in full. This is a new development to the workers in the state,
especially 28% of the workforce who have been collecting modulated salary since
July 2015.
Osun State
Joint Public Service Negotiating Council has earlier issued a 21-day ultimatum
to the government to settle backlog of salaries and pensions. According
to the labour unions, “We have resolved that the July 2018 and subsequent
salaries and pensions should be paid in full, which include payment of the
backlog of arrears of salaries and pension from September 2015.
Meanwhile,
the state government’s decision to pay the workers in full aligns with the Infoprations’ insight that emerged from
the recent analysis of the social media messages, where indigenes of the state reacted
to the All Progressives Congress’ candidate statement on the outstanding salaries.
Analysis
indicates that issue-based messages such as outstanding salaries of civil
servants in the state is likely to help oppositions in getting voters’ support
for the September 22 election.
