CDS:Revamping Primary Education Through Community Mobilization

It took ex-head of states General Yakubu Gowon several days, weeks and months before he eventually came about 3R'S for the upward review of the consequences of the first civil war in the most populous black nation,Nigeria. The 3R'S signifies reconstruction, rehabilitation and redevelopment, believing that the nation would move back to the progress train in all ramifications. This lofty idea resulted to the establishment of National Youth Service Corps(NYSC),basically to bring peace and unity back into the country, especially among the easterns cum other regions.Since then, the scheme has being contributing to the uplift of Nigerians, especially rural dwellers in terms of socio-economic developments through Community Development Service projects executed by corp members either individually or group.However,Omi-Aro and Labaka-Oja are among the beneficiaries of the scheme. As part of the requirements that they actually obeyed the clarion call, corp members in the two tiny communities came together to rescue the dwindling basic primary education in the areas under the group's pet project tagged LABAKA-OJA/OMI-ARO PRIMARY EDUCATION ADVANCEMENT INITIATIVE(LOPEDAI).The project was launched officially on 21st and 22nd May,2011 in Labaka-Oja and Omi-Aro respectively through community mobilisation and sensitisation, which was attended by the pupils, parents and guardians, and community leaders. According to the President of the group,Corper Israel Ishola, the pupils in the two communities found it diffcult to communicate in simple English Language, solving basic mathematical problems and understanding elementary sciences. This prompted the members to initiate the project and decided that from 12pm to 1pm every Thursdays corp members in the areas would be at Labaka-Oja Primary School for intensive coaching for the pupils in the three key areas identified by the group,he stressed.
