As there are many misconceptions about causes and transmission of malaria in Nigeria, Nigerians believe that killing mosquitoes, the carrier of its symptoms, requires insecticide than fumigation, Infoprations has found.
Mosquitoes are
thought to bite persons at night, breed in stagnant water and rest in dark
places inside houses during the daytime. In 2015, statistics
shows that Nigeria recorded
192,284 deaths, making
her one of the African countries that account for nearly 50% of the global
malaria deaths.
In many homes and
gardens in the country, insecticide is always considered as the solution to eliminate
mosquitoes. However, a
recent study which discovered mosquitoes resistance to insecticide net
called for a rethink on the right solutions to mosquitoes’ elimination. According to the study, mosquitoes resistance
to insecticide net is more prevalent in Jigawa, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto,
Zamfara, Benue, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Anambra, Enugu, Rivers, Lagos,
Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo states.
Why Nigerians don’t have interest in fumigation

Analysis
reveals that Nigerians’ interest in insecticides was high than fumigation from
January to June, 2018 despite that insecticides produced by companies are not
effective in killing mosquitoes especially in urban areas. Observations
indicate that some species of mosquitoes could only be suppressed by the
insecticides for a while not eliminating them from homes and gardens totally.
It is
imperative that individuals and businesses consider fumigation as the lasting
solution to exterminating mosquitoes in enclosed spaces at homes and gardens. In
this regard, Nigerian facility management companies have critical role to play.
Aggressive awareness campaign is needed because the more Nigerians sought knowledge
about the negative impact of mosquitoes in their life the more they had
interest in using insecticide. Infoprations
equally discovered that one percent increase in Nigerians’ interest in
mosquitoes in homes decreases understanding fumigation as potential solution by
37.5% whereas it increases insecticide as solution by 45.9%. FM
companies also need to convince individuals and businesses that FM has specific
roles to play in ending malaria in Nigeria because one percent increase in Nigerians’
interest in the presence of mosquitoes in all places reduces consideration of
FM by 4.1%. As Nigerians’ interest in mosquitoes in home increases by one
percent, interest in facility management improves by 16.8%, analysis suggests.
