How Lekki LCDA is Working Towards Climate Change Impacts Mitigation

Having a clear vision on how to be climate resilient has been suggested as the first step towards climate change mitigation by government at various levels. Like other local governments in Lagos state in coastal areas, Lekki Local Government Development Authority has been making frantic efforts aiming at reducing the impacts of climate change in various communities in the last few years.
Given the casualties recorded following epidemics in most developing countries due to open defecation, the construction of public toilet is being given priority as a prophylactic measure against outbreak of preventable diseases. Public toilets have been constructed at Folu and Osoroko towns. Knowing fully well that children are most susceptible to diseases, toilets were also constructed in primary schools in Lekki, Igbogun, Igbodola and Ideh. The indiscriminate defecation in public areas has been eradicated.
In line with the Cleaner Lagos initiative, monthly environmental sanitation is being enforced throughout Lekki LCDA. Refuse dumped at different locations in the Local Council Development Area such as Osoroko and Okun-Folu are regularly cleared. This has resulted in an improved health record as incidences of preventable diseases are non-existent.
Due to the noticeable increase of the Green House Effect, Global Warming, depletion of the ozone layer and flooding, countries around the world embarked on a tree planting initiative. Lekki LCDA followed suit by implementing a tree planting programme spanning the communities in the LCDA. This programme was successfully adopted by companies in Lekki Free Trade Zone as the whole expanse of the zone is lined with trees. Apart from its protective function, the tree planting programme increased the aesthetics of Lekki LCDA.
Apart from organic pollutants of water such as oil spills, food processing waste, volatile organic compounds (VOC), raw sewage, toxic dumps and pesticides, aquatic weeds such as water hyacinth, water lettuce, ferns, reeds, given their proliferation rate, impede man’s exploitation of water bodies. Being a coastal community, Lekki LCDA is often affected by the huge mass of water hyacinths, making fishing and transportation impossible. The Council Mayor cleared the water bodies at Ereke of the hyacinths, thereby easing fishermen’s means of livelihood and facilitating water transportation.
As the world clamours for humane and sustainable exploration and exploitation of natural resources, Lekki LCDA is moving with the time. The Light UpLekki project, a solar renewable power project, is an instance of the council’s conscious effort at establishing environment-friendly activities.
The council is partnering companies and industries in the Lekki Free Trade Zone to adopt eco-friendly strategies in executing their business activities. To ensure compliance with international best practice and ensure sustainability for posterity, Lekki LCDA has given environmental issues substantial attention in the last few years. These are being achieved because of the visionary leadership of Barrister Mukandasi Ogidan.
He has ensured that access to safe water, a weighty environmental issue and major Sustainable Development Goal objective, is guaranteed by sinking boreholes in primary schools in Lepia, Imosan, Ilege, Idata, Ise as well as Okun-Ilagbo village, Lekki Town, Osoroko Town, and Lekki PHC. This has improved the overall hygiene of the community and helped the people of Lekki LCDA to adopt hygienic practices.
