Professor Kabiru Bala and Sustainable Facilities Management in Ahmadu Bello University

Professor Kabiru Bala

After several months of working on the right person for the leadership of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, professor Kabiru Bala emerged as the new Vice Chancellor. Since his emergence, concerned stakeholders of the university have continued to express their feelings and expectations. The Kaduna born professor of building construction and management is expected to lead the University for the next five years.
As he walks through the existing structure and people for the realisation of his objectives for the university, Infoprations has discovered that he needs to deploy his knowledge and skills of building construction and management for the institutionalisation of sustainable facilities management practices in the University.
As a member of several national and international professional organisations, which include the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB); Society of Construction Industry Arbitrators (SCIArb) Nigeria; International Facility Management Association (IFMA) USA; Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) UK; International Association of Housing Science (IAHS), USA; Association for Project Management (APM) UK, among others, professor Kabiru needs to revisit the processes, people and technologies being used for the maintenance and management of the existing facilities across colleges, faculties and departments.
Professor Bala needs to explore his membership of the International Facility Management Association and the knowledge of local and international facilities management practices for the right processes, people and technology usage for the maintenance of critical facilities at the Institution.
This is imperative because a recent study shows that Kashim Ibrahim Library needs an efficient Maintenance Management Plan. A report has also had it that patients are contributing money to fix broken facilities at the Institution teaching hospital, ABU Teaching Hospital. The approaches to the maintenance of hostels and other facilities such as electrical and mechanical materials also need to be revisited.
