Offa:The Home of Ostrich

No matter the length and breath of a place,in a typical African society such place would be known for one historical object or the other,in most cases, animal (living or dead).Iwo,one of the urbanised towns in Osun State is associated with Parrot,a bird till today, the town is known as ile Ódídere meaning the home of Parrot likewise,Ibadan (the largest city in West Africa) mostly called ilu Ogunmóla, who happened to be one of the most respected Warriors of the ancient city. Thus, the city is also called different names today apart from its historical nomenclature,Ibadan(Eba Ódan).Apparently, the local Drum,Dúndún,is an ancient musical instrument associated with the city too.The Drum, which usually adds glamour to any traditional occasion of Yoruba throughout the universe.Offa, another typical Yoruba town in Kwara State is associated with Ostrich (Okin in Yoruba parlance) like other towns, cities and villages in the South-Western part of Nigeria. My recent visit to the town revealed its cultural richness cum hospitality. From Ajasseipo to the historical town, the atmosphere was cool as there was a 'tiny' rain which gave the town little breeze like what we have in Jos,Plateau State. The Olofa's Palace with its modern and African mud architectural design, with the gigantic Central Mosque said to be built by the monarch himself are among the ancient buildings that will attract attention of potential Tourists or Travellers into the town.Above all, the picturesque (statue) of the Ostrich associated with the town placed at the heart of the town will linger on in the minds of tourists and travellers, who deem it fit to visit the ancient town.No doubt,Offa remains a town to be visited!
