TITLING FILM IN NIGERIA

No doubt, film remains one of the means of entertaining people, when it comes to the use of television for entertainment purpose. Some years ago, Nigeria's film market was rated high in terms of film production (for quantity). Thus, different 'genres' emerge on weekly basis. A critical appraisal of the titles given to such home-movies revealed their non-correspondence with the central themes of the movies. Some producers or writers gave titles that have the tendency of tarnishing people's images or creating wrong impressions or perceptions of one religion or the other. Some years back, a film written by Chief Jide Kosoko titled AMINAT ELEHA nearly caused chaos. It took intervention of concerned authorities both in the film and non-film industries before it was resolved and the title was changed to AFOMO. It seems that, the event did not serve as a lesson for the writer or producer and his colleagues in the industry. 'Muniru ati Ambali, Jelili' are the titles of new Yoruba movies derived from the names of main characters. These titles are not in anyway supporting the central themes of the films. They are just cliff-hangered! The question remains, does the concerned authorities actually vet these movies before they were released to the market? Lot of Visitors
