No doubt, cotton has been used to produce clothes for many years and still been applying at the neglect of bamboo, which has been found to be eco-friendly in terms of its usage for cloth making. Information has it that most of the bamboo used to make bamboo fibre and bamboo clothing is grown in China by Hebei Jigao Chemical Fiber Company. The firm holds the patent on the process for turning bamboo into fibre. The bamboo species used for clothing is called moso bamboo. Moso bamboo is the most important bamboo in China, where it covers about 3 million hectares (about 2% of the total Chinese forest area). It is the main species for bamboo timber and plays an important role for the ecological environment. Africa has about 43 species of bamboo covering about 1.5 million hectares. Forty of these species are mainly distributed in Madagascar. Bamboo usage for cloth making is relatively new compare to what the plant has been made of in building construction and furniture making. In Asia and some parts of Europe where bamboo cloth is being embraced, fashion designers are making different styles for the people. Long sleeve, polos, jackets are some of the tops made from bamboo, while shorts, skirts, pants fall under bottom fashion category that are being designed by professional designers. Recently, bamboo fabric has entered accessories’ world. Handbags, belts and hats are now made from the fabric. This trend is mostly seen among Chinese, Japanese and countries like Thailand, India and so on. The users have seen it as comfortable to wear, soft and breathe well. “Bamboo fabric absorbs moisture and will wick sweat away from your skin. Bamboo fabric maintains some of the anti-bacterial properties of the bamboo plant. This means that bamboo clothing smells fresher for longer,” said Natural Clothing Company, a bamboo textile firm based in Canada. Commenting on the eco-friendliness of bamboo attire, Ryan, founder Shanti Green, a bamboo textile company based in Thailand, said: “Choosing to buy clothing and other products made from sustainable and organically grown materials will have a positive impact on the Earth. According to him, bamboo will be a better long-term solution for the planet, especially the climate change. Environmentalists say clothes made from bamboo are sustainable due to the lack of need for pesticides and agrochemicals because of its disease and pest resistant. Africans are not left out too in the latest fashion. The fear of consequences of climate change is now the wisdom for everyone.
