In the last 24 hours, Nigerians interest in reading news within politics, sports, health, business and economy is at different volume. Analysis reveals that most Nigerians read sports news than politics, health, business and economy.
Out of the total 12,965 of news volume searched by Nigerians 80.1% was on the sports news followed by politics, which accounted for 10.8%. The high interest in the sports and political news could be as a result of ongoing 2018 World Cup in Russia and recent uncertainties that characterised Nigerian politics ahead of 2019 general elections.
Analysis further suggests that five forces shaped Nigerians’ interest in the news categories. The interest in economy was driven by the need to be realistic on the state of the economy. However, this force had 22.3% of being the yardstick for reading economy news. This indicates that there is possibility of shifting towards normative orientation on the state of the economy.
Interest in sports grew due to the need to share exciting moments associated with sporting activities. Sports news stories were read and discussed in a tightly-knit sphere. This is likely to continue for a long period because Nigerians do not believe in a loosely-knit sphere when it comes to watching sporting events, most especially football tournaments.
Business news stories were read because Nigerians always find ways of dealing with unknown future. They cannot fold their hands, waiting for the future to come with intrigues that could make them uncomfortable for many years. This force will continue to be the main factor for reading business reports.
Nigerians’ preference for healthy living as basis of achieving greatness in life enhanced their interest in health news. They know that achievement and materialism can only be attained when they have quality healthcare. They want to know specific information that will ensure quality healthcare for them. This will also remain a key factor for reading health stories in the coming days.
Nigerians read political news during the period because they want to know how governments and other concerned stakeholders are handling existing inequalities across the country. This will continue to be significant factor for reading political news. Analysis suggests no limitation to the factor's effects on Nigerians in the coming days.
