Nigeria is one of the African countries where the delivery
of governance is premised on a framework that entails division of power among
executive, legislative and judiciary. Executive power is exercised by the elected president at the
federal level while governors are saddled with the responsibilities of implementing
federal and their own policies or programmes at the state level.
The
effective implementation of the policies or programmes depends on the level of
political game plays by the politicians every year, especially during election
year. When the polity is characterized by a lot of uncertainties businesses and
citizenry bear the consequences the most.
In 2014,
the country’s politics was low in terms of intra and inter parties’ crises but is
on a high side in 2018, Infoprations’
a year analysis suggests. In their bid of winning 2015 presidential election, some
political parties sought support of members of the People’s Democratic Party in
2014. This led to mass defection of governors, ministers and others from the
PDP to the newly formed All Progressives Congress.
Analysis
shows that defection index was higher in 2014 than 2018, indicating that people’s
interest in politicians who defected in 2014 was high than those defected in
2018. From January to August of the years examined, there is no difference
between the additional knowledge people’s sought on defection. However,
significant difference exists between Nigerian politics of 2014 and 2018.
Analysis further indicates that one percent increase in people’s
interest in Nigerian politics in 2014 led to 30.9% increase in defection. For
2018, 79% increase has been found. In 2014, defection was better understood
within constitution and governor by 22.2%. In 2018, defection is being understood within United States Senate
and Nigerian Senate by 16.7%. In 2014, politics was
understood within Benue politics, women in politics, Nigerian politics,
politics in Nigeria, Nigeria politics by 20% accordingly. In 2018, politics is being understood within Adamawa,
Enugu and Ekiti states politics by 23.10%
