By September 22,
electorates in Osun State will elect a new Chief Executive Officer for another
four years after the exit of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the incumbent governor of
the state. In the last few weeks, parties and supporters have been marketing
voters in all the spheres. As the campaign becomes tense every day,
Infoprations expects qualitative messages that would help the voters in making
the right choice among the 48 contenders.
Voters need information
that establishes ideas, experiences and values of the candidates. These are
expected to be the narratives in virtual and physical spheres not name calling narrative
being spread by some parties-politicians induced Facebook users. This observation is in line with the recent
analysis of select campaign messages by Infoprations.
Meanwhile a new
analysis shows that supporters of the two leading candidates engaged in tug of
words which ensured narratives and counter narratives. Senator Ademola Adeleke
of the People’s Democratic Party was described as incompetent, having no vision
for the state. Some of his supporters countered the no vision narrative,
analysis suggests.
Supporters of Alhaji
Gboyega Oyetola set him up with ideas and experiences narratives. Like the PDP’s
candidate, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola was framed with no vision narrative.
The failed three-part governorship narrative
Comments of the followers of the party-politician
induced Facebook user analysed by Infoprations
did not reflect three narrative tactics –presentation of the candidates’ ideas, experiences and understanding
of the current socio-economic status of the state and possessing concrete plan
towards its development as expected. In line with these insights, Infoprations believes that supporters of
the two candidates do not have substantial knowledge on ideas, experiences,
values, state of the state and vision for the state of the candidates.
Parties, candidates and supporters should note that telling
compelling stories matter. Voters need to understand how the candidates will
take Osun state out of its present socio-economic challenges. Can Adeleke or
Oyetola deliver Osun from dwindling revenue and low industrial development?
