Despite 0.9% increase in Nigeria’s mobile phone active voice subscribers, GDP dipped by 4.9% in Q2 2018


A new report from the National Bureau of Statistics in Nigeria indicates that the country’s mobile phone active subscribers increased by 0.09% in Q2 2019. According to the report, a total of 162,522,772 subscribers were active on voice as against 149,309,815 in Q1 2018.
“Similarly, a total of 103,514,997 subscribers were active on internet as against 100,923,580 in Q1 2018 which represented 2.57% growth in subscribers base. Lagos State has the highest number of subscribers in terms of active voice per State in Q2 2018 and closely followed by Ogun and Kano States respectively while Bayelsa and Ebonyi States have the least number of subscribers. Similarly, Lagos State has the highest number of subscribers in terms of active internet per State in Q2 2018 and closely followed by Ogun and FCT respectively while Bayelsa and Ebonyi States have the least number of subscribers.

Meanwhile, Infoprations’ analysis establishes that despite the increase, the country’s real Gross Domestic Product dipped by 4.9%, signifying that the increase in the active voice subscribers did not make significant positive contribution to the real Gross Domestic Product during the period. However, the negative impact is not strong on the economy during the quarter because analysis reveals that the subscribers contributed 0.2% to the real GDP growth.
