Nigerians have less than 157
days to be at polls for the 2019 general elections. Already, the politics has
been heated with a lot of certainties and uncertainties from the political
gladiators and underdogs across the six geopolitical zones in the country. Before
the days of electing President, Governors and members of assemblies at national
and state levels, political debates are most likely to be organised by civil
societies and media establishments with a view of assisting electorate in
making informed voting decisions.
Infoprations equally subscribes to this approach. However, it has
emerged that organisers of the debates need to reinvent the template used in
the previous debates. It is high time that aspirants are engage within the
Sustainable Development Goals, a global action framework adopted by all the UN
member countries in September 2015. If truly Nigeria wants to be part of the
countries that will transform lives and preserve the planet by 2030, political
parties and candidates should be engaged in constructive discourse using the 17
Goals.
These observations emanate
from the preliminary findings of a research being carried out by Infoprations in collaboration with Adewole Lawal, a
Sustainability and Public Policy Specialist, on the adoption of SDGs as
Political Debate Template for the 2019 general elections.
Infoprations and the Specialist believe that using each of the 17
SDGs for political discourse will help in correcting the lack of political will
that prevented the country from achieving some of the defunct Millennium
Development Goals.
In the next days, Infoprations will publish the details of
the analysis of each of the 17 SDGs, highlighting how civil societies, media
organisations and other concerned stakeholders could explore the SDGs for meaningful
Presidential and Governorship Debates in Nigeria.
