Contextual Intelligence: The Key to Tailored Solutions Delivery in Nigeria’s FM Industry

In the previous analysis, the Infoprations’ position was that both individuals and businesses want an accurate and a deep understanding of issues or problems discovered by FM companies on electrical, mechanical and other essential facilities for operational activities. The trend has called for the generation of concrete insights towards the provision of the right solutions. “The insights should guide in selecting appropriate solutions not the problems leading to solution choice.” Infoprations further notes that companies that develop insights are most likely to solve problems on facilities analytically, proceeding through the problem using step-by-step approach.  While solving the problem, it is imperative that companies display their contextual intelligence prowess. CI as espoused by experts is the ability of FM companies through employees to apply knowledge to the specific problems identified on clients’ facilities and exerts influence within the clients’ environment.

The appropriation of CI requires that FM companies develop contextual map, which must encompass issues intelligence, technical intelligence and cultural intelligence. Technical personnel need to identify problems or issues on facilities first before deploying their technical knowledge and skills towards resolving them. In the course of identifying the issues and applying technical capabilities, understanding the norms and values of the users of the facilities is a must. Failure to know the clients’ rules or principles regarding how technicians should comport themselves could lead to operational risks.  The effectiveness of FM companies in each intelligence is key to the provision of sustainable solutions delivery and capture the needed values on both sides –Client and FM Company.

Can FM Professionals Be Taught CI?

Like other tools and techniques in FM, CI can be taught in the educational and training levels. It is necessary that universities, training companies and certified professional associations include it in their curriculum if it remains elusive. As long as clients’ psychographics and demographics keep changing neglecting CI would have greater negative impacts on FM businesses.
