In Lagos and other Nigerian
cities, it is a norm that transport fares will increase during festivals. The
increase has usually linked with fuel scarcity and a surge in the number of
people who travel from one location to another. A short analysis conducted by Infoprations a few hours ago reveals
that Lagos residents’ interest in knowing the cost of transporting people and
goods from the city to other cities was huge than understanding the nature of
traffic in the metropolis. The interest in fare was 89%, while traffic was 11%.
However, the residents are
yet to understand the connection between the traffic and the hike in the cost
of using car sharing providers in the city. A
resident who expressed her feelings on the professional network platform
did not see the reason for the increase in Uber and Taxify’s fare charge
because there are no reports of fuel hike or scarcity in the country.
“I mean there is no fuel hike or scarcity in
Nigeria right? Or are you just charging us Christmas price? I just paid N9, 423
for a trip that has never cost me more than N4,700 on bad days and everyone on
my timeline is also complaining. Please can we get some logical explanation
around this because I feel like I was really robbed today?”
Some friends of the resident
believe that the issue could be resolved when a formal complaint is addressed
to the providers either through written correspondence or complaint sections of
their mobile applications. “Make a complaint. I am sure they will adjust what
was charged,” one of her connections advised. “Kindly report the trip. I
discovered the drivers now play tricks as well. On two occasions mine was
resolved and I was refunded,” another colleague added.
