From 2019, the Nigerian facility management industry would be
in the midst of red and blue oceans. Companies and professionals would face the
challenge of managing smart
buildings. On the company side, there would be a shortage of facilities and
workplace management practitioners who possess Internet of Things’ knowledge
and skills because professional associations and training companies are yet to
include data science courses in their curriculum. On the practitioner side, it
would be hard to secure placement in companies that would manage the buildings
from 2020.
The inclusion of the data
science courses is imperative because it will help in the proper management of
facilities in the smart buildings, expected to generate voluminous unstructured
data at a high speed. To make the right decisions, the generated data must be
analysed using descriptive, predictive and prescriptive approaches. This has
made it necessary for facility managers to be equipped with programming,
modeling, statistics and analytics knowledge and skills. To
attract practitioners, FM training companies should emphasize technological
and operational challenges in obtaining, analysing and using big data.
