How Punch Newspaper is Fueling Obasanjo’s Statement on National Debt

The trending analysis conducted by Infoprations has revealed that the approach taken by the Punch Newspaper in writing the headline of the recent debt statement credited to the former President Olusegun Obasanjo is increasing public interest in understanding the country’s debts.
It could be recalled that the Paris Club cancelled the country’s debts during the administration of the Messenger (Olusegun Obasanjo). Analysis indicates that people in Bayelsa have had significant interest in knowing debt as a concept and an issue facing Nigeria under the current administration.
As at the time of writing this report, Bayelsa remains the only state in the southern region, where people have developed a significant interest in the issue. This is quite different from what we found in northern states. Majority of people in the region did not exhibit interest in understanding the issue, but developed a substantial interest in knowing President Muhammadu Buhari as a person.

Our analysis suggests that people in southern region had interests in the issue because of the headline pattern of The Punch Newspaper. Out of six newspapers we examined, the newspaper and The Premium Times used “risks” in their headline. However, The Punch newspaper's headline had a significant level of fear (61 out of 100) than The Premium Times followed by The Nation, which adopted “sinking” and “weight of debt” as word and phrase to frame the message. With this, The Nation has succeeded in creating 52% out of expected 100% level of fear for the issue of national importance.
