The
mid-year report of various crimes in African countries indicates that South
Africa, Namibia, Kenya and Nigeria are the top four countries the high level of
crimes on the continent. Tanzania, Libya, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Egypt and Algeria
followed accordingly.
Tunisia is at the
bottom of the top 15 countries on the continent released by the Numbeo, an international online database
that aggregates citizens’ views across the world on the level of crime, health
care, property prices, pollution, traffic, travel and quality of life.
Despite being within
the range of 20 and 40, considered as low score for the safety index, South
Africa is adjudged as the country with the highest crime rates, having 76.08 score out
of 100 used to gauge crime rates. Namibia followed the Southern African country
with 68.10 score for her crime rates and 31.90 score for the safety window.
Kenya and Nigeria had
63.63 and 61.48 score respectively for their level of crimes while they posed
36.37 and 38.52 score respectively for the safety index. These scores establish
the level of crimes being perpetrated in the top countries.
A recent report places
Nigeria at 22nd of the top 25 countries in the world highest murder
rates. This is not a surprise to the citizens and civil societies because since January
this year Nigeria is notorious for extremely
high rates of all violent crimes. Every
year, about 20 out of 100,000 Nigerian people are victims of a murder.
Moreover, hideous practices of raping, domestic violence or even slavery remain
common things in the country.
