As 2019 World FM Day starts in May, it is important that professionals and companies reflect on the
issues and trends in the industry in the last few years. To assist the
stakeholders in their deliberation during the celebration, here are 5 insights
from our previous analyses of the industry in Nigeria with specific reference
to this year’s theme “Celebrating Global FM Standards”
#1.
Place of Corporate Knowledge in Roundtable Discussion
Corporate
knowledge will lead to the inclusive FM Roundtable event. Our model
indicates that companies in the industry need to exploit corporate knowledge
tool beyond organisational level. Extending the tool to the industry will
enable organisers have robust themes for the event. It is imperative that
company’s individual knowledge gathered while dealing with clients across the
industry segments is exploited for the themes formulation and invitation of the
participants.
#2.
Solutions Standardization
No matter the amount of resources committed to
standardization of solutions and customer’s expectation management, operations
and technical departments without personnel with data and insight-driven
mindset will always be clog in the wheel of sustainable solutions delivery and
value capturing.
#3. Discover, Deliver, Encourage and Capturing Value
DDE can only be achieved within the
Research and Development context. R and D is one of the business growth
components many companies do not prioritise, especially those in the services
industry. Like other countries in developing world, Nigerian FM companies are
lagging behind in the adoption of R and D. For instance, in the recent
analysis, it was discovered that few companies in the Nigerian FM industry are
capable in terms of innovating solutions for commercial, residential and
industrial segments of the industry.
#4. Contextual Intelligence and Workers’
Performance
Like other tools and techniques in FM, CI can be taught in
the educational and training levels. It is necessary that universities,
training companies and certified professional associations include it in their
curriculum if it remains elusive. As long as clients’ psychographics and
demographics keep changing neglecting CI would have greater negative impacts on
FM businesses.
#5. Fraud in Procurement and Its
Consequences on Process, Solutions
In addition to the impacts of the quality and financial risks
identified previously, companies in the industry are most likely to lose a
significant amount of money to the risk and a developing bad corporate image
that would be difficult to disentangle in the next few years.
